Katana

These were the traditional swords created by the Japanese. These were also more commonly known as the “Samurai Sword” which was used in feudal japan. Characteristics of the sword feature a  curved single-edged blade. The grip accommodates two hands.

Wielders of this sword rely on quick draws and fast response times to finish their enemies. Samurai can literally draw their sword and inflict wounds on their enemies in one movement. The average length of a katana is 73 cm or 28 ½ inches.

Tamahagane is a special Japanese steel used to forge the blade. To smelt this various steels must be smelted together to even out the carbon content. Types of steels used are Hagane (Hard Steel)  Kawagane (Medium Steel) and Shigane (Soft Steel).

Daisho is the pairing of a katana and a smaller sword. Wakizashi is an example of companion sword commonly seen with the katana. Tanto is another small dagger commonly paired with this blade as well. Only samurai could wear this combination due to the representation of nobility and honor.

Katanas should always be stored horizontally in sheath curve down and edge facing up. Keeping the blade oiled is a key component as well.

Iaido is a modern Japanese martial art and sport involving the steady, smooth, and controlled movements of drawing the sword from the scabbard. The user display cutting and striking actions and other various activities such as removing blood from the blade. Beginners use a wooden blade for practice. The purpose of this sport is for the reflection of morals which help the user build on characteristics such as will, intellect, and spirit.

Masamune and Muramasa are two famous sword smiths many legends revolve around the two.
